CHAPTER 12

Lillith was standing outside waiting for Jule. She approached her car as William pulled up behind and parked in the driveway.

“Loki called me and told me what happened,” Lillith explained as Jule got out of the car. They hugged each other tightly. “Are you guys okay?”

Jule’s hands were finally at ease and stopped shaking. The tears in her eyes dried and she regained her composure.

“Yeah, we’re fine,” Jule replied with a hard gulp. “I’m going with William out to his ranch tonight. Will you and the kids be safe here?”

“I have kept us off of the radar pretty well so I’m not too worried,” Lillith said with firm confidence.

William got out of his truck and approached them, finding his place next to Jule and resting his arm protectively around her shoulders. Lillith smiled sweetly at their affection. Jule wrapped her arm around his waist and rested her head against his chest.

“We’re just here to get some of her things,” William explained.

Jule released her grasp and headed up to the guest house to gather her belongings. She snagged up her old backpack dumping out its current contents and placed a clean change of clothes, a few hygienic items, her phone, and charger.

William and Lillith were chatting as Jule returned ready to go.

“You keep her safe,” Lillith demanded motherly.

“I will,” he promised.

Jule loaded herself into William’s truck and waved goodbye as they headed out. She worried for her friend and her children.

Stay safe, she silently wished them.

William rested his hand in Jule’s lap as they drove. She placed her hand on his and they clasped together in a firm hold. She gazed out the window at the hypnotic passing streetlights, the hum of the engine deafening in the silence.

William turned on the stereo. They listened to the music without saying a word all the way to the ranch. After some time, he pulled up the dark driveway and parked in front of the house.

“I’ll show you the bedroom so you can set your stuff down,” he said as Jule followed him inside. He turned a few lights on his way through the house to the spiral staircase. It was roomy up there with a cozy little reading hut tucked away in a niche framed with a small bookshelf and a white-framed window. Jule imagined herself sitting in that spot reading a book and drinking hot coffee on a cold rainy day. What a perfect little spot, she thought with delight. She followed him down a short hallway to the last door on the left. A king size bed with log poles making up the frame sat in the middle of the opposite wall. A massive black and red comforter draped over the mattress nearly reached the floor. Pillows of all sizes were stacked neatly at the head of the bed. A Navajo rug that matched the bedding set hung behind it on the wall. To the left of the bed was a floor-to-ceiling pair of glass doors with elegant silver handles that opened up to a large balcony overlooking the national forest.
